How Does Family Based Therapy for Eating Disorders Work?

Family Based Therapy (FBT typically) unfolds over three phases, with the therapist guiding and supporting the family at each step:

Parents take charge of meal planning, portion sizes, and mealtime structure. This may include lovingly but firmly supervising all eating and helping the child challenge food fears. The therapist supports parents in managing distress, navigating resistance, and staying united.

Phase 2: Returning Control to the Young Person

 

Once physical health begins to stabilise and eating becomes more consistent, parents gradually hand back responsibility for food choices and eating. The therapist monitors progress and ensures this shift happens at a pace that supports ongoing recovery.

Phase 3: Addressing Broader Developmental Issues

 

With the eating disorder more under control, therapy turns toward age-appropriate concerns—such as identity, independence, school stress, or body image. Family dynamics, communication, and future relapse prevention are also addressed.
